MATAMATA’S BIRTHDAY PARTY It was unanimously agreed by those preseut that the 17th birthday party of the Matamatu branch of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers of New Zealand was an outstanding success. Nearly 100 people were in’esent, and the luncheon committee provided plentiful and attractive fare on taste-fully-arranged tables. The committee, comprising Mesdames Cockerton James, Vincent, West, Reid, Hawes and Dench, were ably assisted by the decoration committee, Mesdames Buckley, Desmond, Gould and Reeve, in adding to the festive appearance by the arrangement of bowls of camellias and contoneaster around the hall Following her speech of welcome to the many guests, the president, Mrs. Dunseath, presented shoulder sprays to Mrs. Sealey, the president of Pialco Provincial Executive, and to Mrs. Hall, immediate past president of the Matamata branch, who has given seven consecutive years’ service in an executive position, four as secretary and three years as president. Mrs. V. Anderson, the only founda. tion member who still belongs to the branch, presented Mrs. Dunseath with a shoulder spray. Mrs. Coxhead, o.u behalf of the Matamata Women’s Institute, also presented a spray to Mrs. Dunseath. A community sing song with Mrs. Cotter at the piano was followed by the presentation of trophies, the recipients being:— Best Bloom: Mrs. Petersen 1, Mrs. Rekl 2. Points Competition: Mrs. Shaw 1, Mi’s. Gould 2., The lucky cup prize was won by Mrs. Petersen; the gift for the oldest lady present went to Mrs. Cleaver, senior; while a nursery rhyme competition was won by Mrs. Seed (Ngaruaj. A most enoyable programme was planned by the entertainment committee (Mesdames Dunseath, Hall, Petersen and Hughes) and presented entirely by members of the Matamata branch, assisted by their families. The items were; Piano S»lo, Master Noel ' Green; voc-ai solos, Mr. W. Green and Airs. Petersen; piano and violin duet, Mesdame s Cotter and Malligan; Dutch tableau, Mrs. M. .1. Shaw, with Mrs Hall as soloist. A one-act play reading, “ Between the Soup and the Savoury,” was presented by Mrs LandeUs as Emily, Mrs. Hughes as Marie, and -Miss A. Wooderson as Ada. The accompaniments were played by Mrs. Tarrant and Mrs. Hall. The attractive birthday cake, with its 17 candies, was the work of Mrs. Dench, who is to be congratulated on the success of her effort.
