PRODUCTION OF PIG MEATS

GREATER EFFORT NEEDED Helping To Conserve Dollar Funds Reporting on last meeting of the National Pig Council, Mr A. G. Alexander, chairman, told, delegates' to Morrinsville sub-rprovincial conference, Federated Farmers, that any increase in the price of pig meat could not be expected l this season Last season only 10,000 tons, mostly pork, -was exported to Britain, cohaparecl with aßMit 30,000 tons, mostly bacon, before the war, Mr. Alexander urged tjjat everything possible should be done to increase pig meat production for export thereby helping Britain to conserve dollars which she otherwise had to spend in importing pork and bacon from dollar countries. It was prolbable the percentage for pigs would be divorced from the butterfat price structure when the proposed dairy commission was established. Wellington Conference Mr. Alexander also reported on the last dairy section conference at Wellington, explaining various mattors which were vital to all dairy farmers. In the discussion which followed the general opinion of delegates might be summarised as follows: that the dairy commission will be the arbitrary body; that- the present dairy board be abolished, and that a reconstituted dairy industry council be set up as an advisory body to the commission, and l that Federated Farmers hava equal representation on the advisory council. At the request of the Te Pun-in-ga branch, Mr. J. S. Thomas spoke on the go-slow policy .at the freezing works. He gave a clear picture of the position and stated that as the matter was being dcialt with by official investigation it was inadvisable at this stage to make any definite statement. However, members could rest assured that, everything that could be done was being done to enable an early settlement to be reached.
