RIDING SEATS VACANT
WAIKATO AND MATAMATA Adjustment Of Boundary It was mentioned at the May ■meeting of the Matamata County Council that the adjustment of the boundary between the Matamata and Waikato counties automatically rendered vacant the seats of the two ridings affected, that of Karapiro in Matamata and of Cambridge in Waikato. The adjustment came about over the fact that French Pass could not be properly attended to owing to the fact that it ran through both counties and hence here was a division of rates. In explaining the matter Cr. E. D. White (chairman) commented that in view of the position, Cr. C. Bruce was at the meeting by invitation td keep in touch with affairs. The Act, however, prevented Or. Brucer from voting at that particular meeting. Cr. Bruce stated that he had lodged' his nomination paper that morning and so far as he knew there would be no other nomination. Cr. W. L. Grice, who was leaving the district, submitted his resignation and suggested that to save the expense of an election he might receive leave of absence from month to month if he could not attend meetings ■ ' The chairman agreed, that as the election, came on in- a few months time it was absurd to go to the expense of an election. If Cr. Grice was able, he could attend any meeting until the usual election. Had O. Grice been selling his property the position would have been different.
The council accepted this view of the situation.
