PUTARURU MEETING The May meeting of the Putaruru .Women’s Institute was presided over by the president, Mrs. Stewart. There a good attendance of members and a new member was welcomed. General business was discussed, the most important being the street stall to be held in the near future. All members were asked to do their best to make it a success. During the afternoon Mrs. Steele gave an interesting demonstration on hairpin work. Two very enjoyable duets were rendered by Mesdames K. Wood and D. Radich. The monthly competition was won by Mrs. Sayers, senr. Other competitions were won by: Cooking, Mrs A. Schisehilca; best bloom, Mrs. D. Radich, and sewing, a baby’s petticoat made from a flour bag, Mrs. A. Appelgren. A very pleasant afternoon was brought to a dose by the serving of afternoon tea by the hostesses, Mesdames A. Wightman and K. Wood. Next month’s hostesses are Mesdames J. C. Tomalin andi Uden. TAPAPA MEETING Mother’s Day was celebrated- at the May meeting of the Tapapa Women’s Institute. Each member was presented, with a white flower in honour of mother, and a large bowl of white flowers had- -been placed on the president’s table. Mrs. R. Rutledge presided, assisted by Mrs. G. Stops. The motto, “don’t put it down, put it away,” caused much amusement and some interesting little stories were related. However, members are going to try it out. The roll call, “my favourite pudding,” brought forward a variety of favourites, and many recipes were exchanged. A very interesting letter from a Scottish pen-friend was read, and members) decided to Bend b ESQ E9* stituite she represented another parcel of soap, as the last one seemed to be so much appreciated. Mrs. Buchanan gave a very interesting report of the annual federation meeting held recently in Ma-ta-m-ata, and stated that the branch’s display of three articles gained second place out of a large number of Final arrangements were made for the ninth birthday to be celebrated at the June meeting.
A small gift of aopreciation was made to Mrs. Williams, who is leaving the district to spend a holiday in her home country of Canada. The president, in making the presentation, wished Mrs. -Williams a safe and pleasant voyage and a happy holiday. Mrs. Williams suitably replied. Competitions resulted:— Peasant apron: Mrs. R.
