WAIKATO EAST EXECUTIVE The quarterly meeting of the Wai kato East Provincial Executive of t’h< Women’s Division of the Farmers Union was held recently In Putaruru After lunch delegates proceeded witl with the business, Mrs- P. F Kar presiding over a full attendance After the singing of the National J Anthem and the recitation of the Creed all present stood In silence tc honour the memory of Mrs- Ryburn, who had been a Dominion Advisory Board member and had rendered great service to the organisation. Mrs. Karl reported that the Dominion president, Mrs. Elliot, hoped to visit the area in February. Delegates were advised that supplies of wool held by branches were to be knitted up but that further supplies would not be issued. Directions were given for the collection of raw wool, soap and fat for distribution in Europe. The question of inviting a dressmaker tutor into the Executive’s area was discussed, and further information is to be obtained. The treasurer, Mrs- Voyce, then presented her statement of accounts, and the housekeeper secretary, Mrs. J- Campbell, presented her report on the quarter’s work. The housekeeper
had filled seven positions, as usual there being more applications than could be met. Then followed an interesting discussion as to the future of the housekeeping work, several circulars from headquarters being dealt with. It was felt that higher wages might have to be paid to induce women to undertake the housekeeping work in country areas. Mrs- Karl urged that the establishment of a rest home In the Auckland province should be undertaken as soon as possible, perhaps as the 21st birthday celebrations of the W-D.F.U. It was agreed that this suggestion I should, be forwarded to Dominion i officials-
It was reported that the Dominion president commended to branches the Obstetrical and Gynaecological appeal. Ngongotuha reported that direct appeal is being made in their area, while lieporoa are to stage a concert, and in another district a bazaar is to be held.
Advice was received that an Adult Education Conference was being planned to be held in Auckland. The Executive having been asked to send a representative, Mrs, T. Watkins was appointed as delegate. It was decided to ask for one of the tutors to visit the Executive in June.if possible. -Airs. Karl introduced Miss Phyllis Ranger, who sang to the delegates the
" Peace Song,” which was composed for use at the San Francisco Conference. Miss Ranger was accompanied by her mother.
Then followed a social hour, when various items were presented by the branches. Tikitere performed first, delighting the gathering with action songs which they interpreted. The Ngakuru delegate apologised for having left her item at home, but as she had to walk seven miles to connect with a car she just had not time to go back for it- (Applause.) Ngongotaha entertained with a competition, asking those present to count the articles In their handbags- This • was won by Mrs. Ranger, who was presented with a book of Handy HintsMrs. Richardson, Waotu, played a violin solo, being accompanied by Mrs. Morris. Mrs. West, Tokoroa, gave several elocutionary items. Afternoon tea was then served to enable' those travelling by train to leave. Afterwards, Mrs. Watson, Tirau. gave a humorous reading, and Mrs. Karl, Putaruru, put on a competition, which was won by a Tikitere member, RogersThus concluded a happy and profitable meeting, many important matters •having been discussed and many friendships renewed.
WAOTU BIRTHDAY The Waotu W.D-F.U- celebrated their 13th birthday recently. Among the visitors welcomed by the president were representatives from the Putaruru, Tokoroa and Pukeatua branches and the Arapuni Women’s Institute. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames P. F. Karl, Gordon and Cherry and from the Tikitere and Ngakuru branches. The .afternoon was opened with all singing “ The .King.” Mrs. G. Jones played a pianofortp solo, “ Nola,” and for an encore “ Le-jetd’dau.” A Competition was won by Mrs- Jones. Violin solos, “ Coming Home ” and “ A Soldier Dreams Of You To-night,” were rendered by Mrs. A. Richardson, A musical competition was won by Mrs. Kippenberger. Mrs. Harris gave
a humorous recitation, and Miss Nola Gale contributed pianoforte solos, Community singing was enjoyed, and Mrs Jones played “Coming Home.” A Competition was won by Mrs. McKinnon and Mrs- Smith. senior (equal). While the 13 candles on the birthday cake were being lit all present repeated the Creed. The president thanked all present for their attendance and support. After the president had extinguished the candles Mrs. Meredith on behalf of the Putaruru branch presented her with a beautiful bouquet of roses. Mesdames Voyce and J- Campbell also spoke, the latter speaking about the W.D-F.U. housekeeping scheme. An enjoyable afternoon was closed with the singing of the New Zealand National Anthem.
