ARAPUNI v. PINEDALE

Century To B. Lowry Playing- in Putaruru, Arapuni defeated Pinedale by 99 runs on the first innings. The highlight of the day’s play was the batting displays of B. Lowry (100 retired) .and R. Lowry (83). The former batted brilliantly all round the wicket and gave no chances. R. Lowry, after a grand innings, was bowled by Pickrang in attempting to force the pace. The brunt of the attack was borne by Chambers and Smith, who bowled 20 and 22'overs, respectively, Chambers obtaining the hat trick with the last three balls of the Arapuni innings. For Pinedale, Chambers, Andersen and McGallister put up a solid defence the latter proving very troublesome, and Arapuni only won with 12 minutes of play to spare. ißadham accepted two hot catches hut on the whole the Arapuni fielding was not up to the usual standard. The length of the grass in the outfield accounted; for bhe number of singles showing in the score book, only 64 out of a combined total of 321 rune being scored by boundary hits. Details :

ROVERS Rovers made a poor showing against Tokoroa and were unable to play the good length bowling of Williams and McGa skill, both of whom returned great averages. Rovers two innings yielded only 29 runs* 13 in the first and 16 in the second, while Tokoroa made 48, thus winning by an innings and 19 runs. THIS WEEK’S GAMES Pinedale v. Rovers, at Putaruru; Arapuni v. Putaruru, at Arapuni. CRICKET AT TOKOROA A picnic atmosphere prevailed at a match played at Tokoroa between Pinedale and Tokoroa, the latter winning by 113 runs to 35. The day was perfect, and as the pitch was a bowlers’ paradise the game was not lacking in thrills.

The highlight of the game was the splendid batting of Williams and Evans for Tokoroa. The Pinedale bowlers were well on the wicket, and it was refreshing to see these veteran batsmen playing Chambers and Smith with straight bats and waiting for the loose balls, from which they did not hesitate to score. As evidenced by the score, the Tokoroa bowlers were well on top of the Pinedale batsmen, Williams consistently pinning the batsmen behind the crease, and the left-handed Maori, McGaskill, with well-timed breaks and balls of variable flight and speed, collected the wickets with surprising rapidity. No batsman was easy against him, Anderson being able to stonewall for a time, but inevitably falling to a tricky ball.

The unexpected usually happens in cricket, and no matter what the spectators expected it never happens.
