WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

PUTARURU MEETING : The monthly meeting of the Puta- ■ ruru Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs A. C. Anderson presided over a fair attendance. Mrs Watkins, a former member, was a visitor for the day, and was welcomed by the president. Apologies were received from Mesdames S. Smith, A j Rcwe, M. Paxton and F. Young, j The chief business of the meeting was to arrange for the patriotic j street stall to be held this month. ! Members undertook to collect prc- , dues, children’s clothes ar.d toys. ! A letter of thanks for a box of materials sent by the Institute wa; j received from the Soldiers’ Hospital at Rotorua. The programme was arranged for the next three months. Mrs Furmage next entertained with a competition which was won by Mr s Watkins. The motto for the month, supplied by Mrs C. Waite, was: “It is with life as with men, we make friends by being a friend.” Mrs V. C. Bailey’s competition was won by Mrs Uden. The monthly competitaons were judged as follow: Puff Pastry Tartlets: Mr s A. Sayers. Patchwork Apron for Patriotic Stall: Mrs A. Billinghurst 1, Mrs A. Appelgren 2, Mrs V- C Bailey 3. The cup for the best bloom was won by Mr s A. Appelgren. The .serving of a delicious afternoon tea brought the. meeting to a close. LICHFIELD MEETING The June meeting of the Lichfield Women’s Institute was presided over by the president, Mrs Wood. A good 'attendance of members was present. , One new member was welcmed and enrolled. The motto for the month was: “Never put off till to-morrow what can be done to-day.” The roll call for the month was “An eggless cake.” The month’s competition, of a child’s petticoat, was won by Mrs ABernhard, Mrs Anderson and Mrs Wooderson tying for second place. The articles are to he. sent to the Red Cross. Mrs G. McHardy, of Tapapa, gave a most interesting demonstration on the curing of sheep and calf skins. Two skins were on show, which were a credit to anyone- Also on show were toy animals made from sheepskins. These were much admired.

Arrangements were made for the birthday party which is to be. held next month

Mrs C. Vosper entertained with a kitchen competition which was won by Mrs Wood and Mrs J. Cox. Mrs Wood won the draw.

The mystery parcel was won by Mrs Vosper. The serving of a delicious afternoon tea by the hostesses, Mrs A. Bernhard and Misses B- MeKlintock and Kinloch, brought the afternoon to a close
