RED CROSS MATTERS The usual 500 evening held in the Tirau W-D.F.U_ Rooms in aid of Red Cross funds was again weir attended this'week. After a pleasant evening’s play the winners were Mr s Matthews (ladies) and Mr R- Murphy (men). The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Red Cross was held on Thursday of last week- The pre- , sident ; Mrs C. T. Allen, presided over a good attendance. j During the meeting members were ! busy packing up woollen articles to be sent to the Joint Council cf the ! Red Cross Other members were busy knitting and sewing. A general discussion took place on the best means and ways of sending parcels to prisoners of war. Mrs Way, organiser for Waikato East, explained about the forming of a Junior Red Cross, and after listening to her the meeting decided to form a local branch, and Mrs A. * Hamlin was appointed organiser. PRESENTATION ' At the weekly parade of the j' Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps held on Saturday last the opportunity 1 was taken by the local organisation to bid au revoir to their late Sergt- ' Major, Private Joan Landman, who was new ready for service overseas. Captain (Mrs.) Aickin spoke, of how sorry they were to lose the services of their Sergt.-Major, and °n - behalf of the company wished Joan ' the best of luck in her great adventure and felt sure that Joan would be a credit to her late company and her district • She then presented Private Landman with a pair of flat ' ■b irons and a travelling case. . . Private Landman suitably replied, thanking- her comrades for the pre- i sentation and their good wishes. , 1 personal items .Mr L- Hancock, who has been ser- j ' 9 iously iil in a private hospital, has returned home but it still confined *to j his Bed. . I _ Mr and Mrs W. McDonald are spending a holiday in- Auckland Mrs T Young, of Hamilton, is a visitor to Tirau, and is a guest of her daughter, Mrs G. Wilson.
