Mrs. H. Caldwell, who has been acting as dental nurse at the Putaruru School Dental Clinic, has left the district, and Miss N. Hodges, previously of the Taumarunui School Clinic, has been appointed to take Mrs. Caldwell’s place.

Recently a well-known “ dog about town ” wandered into a local hall while a church function was being held. An official of the church was making a presentation to a young woman who had given good service, and at one stage of his remarks what appeared to be loud applause came from the back of the hall. However, it transpired that the noise was not applause but was caused by the thumping of the dog’s tail on the floor as he vigorously scratched for one of those insects which annoy human beings even more than they do dogs.

Valuation ‘of stock for income tax and social security and national security tax purposes was discussed by the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. J. G. Barclay, on Friday night at the round-table conference organised by the Morrinsville branch of the Farmers’ Union. The Minister stated that the problem had caused officers of his department a good deal of concern, but he considered the arrangement arrived at a very fair and equitable one. In his opinion the provisions for valuation of stock for land and income tax purposes had been misunderstood. They were not complicated, as some farmers seemed to imagine, and he hoped that what he had said would remove I most of the misapprehensions.

A small boy was keen to get into the fowlrun of the place next door. He statted off by asking the lady of the house if he could collect the eggs. She said no, as her husband always collected them when he got home from work. The lad tried from another angle, and asked if he could feed the fowls. Again the reply was no, as they were the husband’s fowls, and he always fed them. After a pause the boy said: “ Does he think he’s the boss of everything here ? ” The wife was caught whether she said yes or no, but it Is certain that with true feminine ingenuity she managed to wriggle out of the trap. 1 An appeal for the maximum acreage of potatoes to be planted this season has been made by the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. J. G. Barclay. “ From a survey made by officers of my department it would appear that there is every likelihood of a serious shortage of potatoes arising this season unless farmers make every endeavour to plant' all available supplies of seed potatoes,” said the Minister. “ The Dominion average acreage in potatoes over the last three seasons amounted to .20,000 acres, yielding* 124,000 tons. Last season a considerable drop in acreage occurred, only 17,000 acres being planted, which, with a record productive season, produced 119,000 tons. The appeal is also applied to householders.
