MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL
MR. J. W. ANDERSON RE-ELECTED The annual meeting of the Matamata County Council was held last, week. There were two nominations for the position of chairman, Crs. J. W. Anderson and J. Pohlen. Cr. Anderson was re-elected for his 24th successive term. When nominations were called for by the county clerk, Mr. J. A. Beck, Cr. J. W. Anderson was nominated. Cr. P. R. Hawke congratulated Cr. Anderson on his long term as chairman, which he thought was a New Zealand. However, he thought tijaf a (liscussion should be held which could only be secured by a ballot. His opinion ' was that the position Of chairman should go round, as there were other councillors well fitted for ithe position. He nominated ,Cr. J. Pohlen, who, he said, had a thorough grasp of council matters and also had the moral courage to stand up for his opinions. Cr. A. H. Stewart seconded Cr. Pohlen’s nomination. After a ballot the clerk announced that Cr. Anderson had been reelected, but did not disclose the votes cast for each. Crs. Anderson and Pohlen did not vote. Inquiries revealed that the votes cast were five for Cr. Anderson and four for Cr. Pohlen. In returning thanks Cr. Anderson said he would do his best for all, as he did in the past, and said he had no animosity regarding the nomination of Cr. Pohlen. ICr. White : We did not expect you would.
