HAY STACK BURNT

ON KEREONE FARM Hay Said to Have Been too Green The destruction by fire last week of a 20-ton stack of hay, and also an adjoining smaller stack, on the farm of Mr. Harkness, Kereone, is attributed by experienced farmers to an unusual cause. It could not, they say, have been due to ordinary internal combustion that results when damp hay is put into a stack after rain, because this hay was harvested in fine weather and not a speck of rain fell on it. However, the harvesters considered it was a bit on the green side when stacked. Thus the heating of the stack is attributed to the natural moisture in the hay. Neighbours cannot recall an instance of a stack being lost in this manner.
