PLUNKET FETE

PUTARURU EFFORT Day for the Young In spite of a very unpromising morning Saturday afternoon’s warm, sunny weather gave the Putaruru Plunket Society’s first floral fete and baby show its generous support. With the varied colours, the tent stalls and busy movement, Glenshea Park presented a bright and animated appearance. That the occasion was a success cannot be doubted, both old and young being represented in large numbers, enjoying themselves thoroughly. It is estimated that over £2O was taken. A hardworking executive, with Mrs. H. B. Coupe, president, and Mrs. C. C. Neal, secretary, at the head, performed excellent service. Other workers were: Ice-cream. stall, Mrs. Haslett and Miss B. Coupe; cordial stall, Mesdames J. J. Shine and C. E. Tulloch; bring and buy stall, Mesdames A. G. Leggatt and H. J. B. Scott; afternoon tea tent, Mesdames R. G. Hutton, Hooper, J. R. O. Lochhead, Campbell, Ranger, Watkins, A. L. Mason, W. Yandle, H. Rees and H. L. Martin. The foot races were started by Messrs. D. D. Sneddon and J. R. O. Lochhead, and were judged by Messrs. R. G. Hutton and A. L. Mason. Mr. Lochhead also acted as steward.

The mounted events were judged by Mr. R. A. Bent, who gave the riders interesting advice on horsemanship. Children’s Dances " The programme was opened by a parade by Brownies and Girl Guides. Folk dancing by the last-named then followed. Gowned in mid-Victorian dress the little dancers in the May dance, coached by Mrs. K. McDermott and Miss Dunlop, gave a very charming display, which was, by special request, repeated later in the afternoon. Another attractive item was that provided by the “ Little 80-Peep ” children, coached by Mrs. H. Rees, whose little cameo was most artistic. During the afternoon native dances were given by a party of Maoris. Winning Babies The prize-winning baby under three months was Austin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Saunders. Peter, the 14-months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Holdcroft, Awapuni, took the prize for babies under 18 months. The judge was Mrs. A. A. Wright, of Okoroire.
