PUTARURU TERRITORIALS
MOUNTEDS AND INFANTRY Units May Be Formed There is every likelihood of Putaruru becoming the centre for the surrounding districts of two branches of the Dominion’s military service. As a result of a poor muster at a recent parade at Tirau for the inception of a troop within the Waikato Mounted Rifles area it is stated that the headquarters may be transferred to Putaruru, as most of the volunteers were from Putaruru.
In a letter to Mr. J. Halkett, of Putaruru, who is an officer in the Hauraki Regiment, the Adjutant, Paeroa, announced that that regiment would call for volunteers for an infantry platoon for Putaruru and would form such if sufficient numbers came forward. .
What will possibly be a great incentive for recruiting in the infantry is the rumour that instead of the annual camp next year the infantry will combine with the . New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy in tactical defensive manoeuvres north of Auckland.
