N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION
PUTARURU BRANCH MEETING A meeting of the Putaruru Farmers’ Union was held on Monday evening-, the president, Mr. J. J. Shine, presiding over an excellent attendance of over twenty, including Mr. Taylor, union organiser, and Mr. C. S. Dalgleish, of the Department of Agriculture, Rotorua. Donations to W.D.F.U. The Women’s Division “ butterfly fund ” will benefit to the extent of £2 from a donation by the meeting. The division is a penny for each dozen white butterflies. A member remarked that there were more butterflies than pennies. Two guineas were also donated to the W.D.F.U. rest room fund. Annual Dinner It was decided to hold an annual dinner as soon after the annual meeting as possible. It will take the form of a social evening, when certificates of merit won by farmers in the past year’s field competitions will be presented. Field Competitions . .Mr. Dalgleish compared the field competitions held in Putaruru with those in other parts, and suggested that pasture competitions be judged in the autumn as well as in the spring, as many pastures were not nearly as good in the autumn months as they had been in the spring. This was agreed with by the meeting. It was also decided to add lucerne to the present list of swedes, hay, ensilage and two pasture competitions. The winning pastures were quite capable of carrying one cow to every 11 acres the whole year round, declared Mr. Dalgleish. Prizes were presented to farmers winning in the 1932-33 field competitions.
