Hinuera.

RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION. Various Subjects Discussed. A well-attended meeting, fully representative of all parts of the Hinuera district, was held on Thursday by the Hinuera Ratepayers’ Association, the president, Mr. P. R. Hawke, being in the chair. Various matters of interest to the community were dealt with. Representations to Council. Dissatisfaction was expressed regarding the results, or rather the lack of results, from the sending of a deputation to the Matamata County Council recently, in connection with certain roading improvements desired. It was stated that no official reply had yet been re- • ceived regarding the council’s decisions upon the matters submitted ' by the deputation. , Appreciation, however, was felt Tor the work of Crs. Pohlen and Stewart in presenting the deputa- ' tion’s case to the council. On the motion of Mr. S. Wright

and Mr. J. P. Harris, it was decided to call a public meeting, to which the Te Poi, Tirau and Peria riding members would be invited to discuss the subjects in question. Railway Lighting. Satisfaction was expressed regarding the decision to widen the railway gates, as requested by the association. In respect of an electric lighting system, which the de- ‘ partment had declined to instal, the ' president explained the further representations that had since been 4 made, and action in this respect was iully endorsed. Hospital Rating. That “ hardy annual,” the incipience of hospital rating, was another topic under review, the con- . elusion being that the basis should ; be on population, and not on the land, since it was the people, and not the land, which became sick and required hospital services. ■ Stock Disease. The meeting unanimously endorsed the objections to the importation into New Zealand of stock from countries where foot-and-mouth disease had appeared in recent times. It was held that every precaution should be taken to present the introduction of such a dreaded disease into this Dominion. Stock Foods. The proposed legislation dealing With stock foods and medicines was approved, the subject being brought tip by Mr. Cotter. The president commented that the Bill was along the lines of a remit passed by the National Dairy Association last year, and thus had Dominion-wide support. Personal. Miss Nancy Maud has returned from a holiday spent in Auckland. Miss B. Wade spent portion of her holiday in Wellington and has returned home. Mrs. Melndoe, of Christchurch, is the guest of her sister, Mrs. R. Hawke.
