Tirau.
Final Card Evening. The Tirau branch of the W.D.F.U. held the last of a series of card evenings in the Town Hall last week. Prize-winners for the evening were : Euchre, Miss Motion, Mr. Fulljames, Miss Houghton, Mr. C. Morris (consolation); 500, Mrs. Keane, Miss Downey, Miss Hetherington, Mr. Croker (consolation). Points prizes for the highest aggregate scores for the season were won by Miss Motion and Mr. Matahere (euchre) and Mr. and Mrs. Naysmith (500). The prizes were presented by the president (Mrs. C. Allen), who also made a presentation on behalf of the branch to Mr. Russell Marshall, who had supplied the music for dancing. Basketball at Rotorua. A basketball team consisting of Misses M. Carruth, M. Penetito, B. Marsh, E. Shaw, E. Brown, L. O’Brien, D. Stanley, E. Tyrrell, V. Bear, and R. Campbell represented Tirau in the tournament held in connection with carnival week at Rotorua. The team left Tirau on Thursday and played on the following two days. The members enjoyed the trip and benefited much from the experience of playing against new and strong opponents. Personal. Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Harvey and family spent the recent holidays at Tauranga and Auckland. Mrs. Harvey and children are remaining in Auckland.
Mrs. F. Battley, who recently underwent a serious operation in the Waikato Hospital, is reported to be making good progress towards recovery. Miss M. Dagg returned to Tirau from a holiday at Cambridge and Auckland. Miss Iris Presco, who has been v visiting her mother, Mrs. J. Townley, has returned to Auckland. W.D.F.U. Meeting. At a well-attended meeting of the Tirau branch of the W.D.F.U. the resignation of the treasurer, Mrs. W. H. G. Allen, on account of illhealth, was accepted with much regret, and Mrs. Bishop appointed in her place. 1 It was decided, in response to a letter from the Dominion Secretary, to send 2s 6d towards a presentation to Mrs. C. C. Jackson, the retiring Dominion President. A good deal of time was spei£ in discussing the forthcoming “ Back to Childhood ” dance. Many minor details were settled, and prizes offered for best girl (by Mrs. Mc-V Laren), best boy (Mrs. Higginson) and best pair. It was agreed to have the roll call, “ What I like best about the creed, and why.” In the competitions a large cake was won by Mrs. Newport, and a knitted jumper by Mrs. Withers. Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Higginson, Hancock • and Litchfield.
