DEBATING SOCIETY.

PUTARURU ACTIVITIES. There was a good attendance at the third meeting of the Putaruru Debating Society, held on Tuesday, when the question “ that the operations of trades unions are beneficial to their members,” was keenly debated. The affirmative team, comprising Messrs. Tetzner, Neal and J. C. Martin, secured a win from the negative team, Messrs. Crabb, Smith and Grocott. At the next meeting of the society on June 1, the question for debate is “ that the Far East has a disruptive influence on world affairs.” Despite the “ heavy ” nature of the subject, the following are going to tackle it in earnest, and an interesting evening- is anticipated: Affirmative team, Messrs. H. W. Baldwin (leader), Tetzner and Mori-ison; negative, Messrs. Louden (leader), H. Martin and H. McCurran.

The syllabus for the 1933 session has been approved, and some topical and controversial subjects are in-

cluded: “ Individualism v. Co-opera-tion,” is one expected to provide a very keen battle, and a debate on currency inflation is likely to be interesting and instructive. Debates with other bodies are being arranged and the success of the society is assdred.
