Mayoral honoraria are not stipends. They are in the nature of an allowance to defray out-of-pocket expenses necessarily associated with the discharge of official and social obligations. Mr. Graham Alcorn, formerly of Putaruru, returned to Palmerston North last week, for his third term at Massey College. During the previous term Mr. Alcorn topped the college for marks in the botany examinations.

Mr. A. Delargey was taken to the Waikato Hospital by Mr. A. G. Leggatt on Sunday morning last. Although Mr. Delargey’s illness is not considered dangerous, it was thought his recovery might be hastened as a hospital patient. Keen interest was displayed at the first meeting of the newly-formed Putaruru branch of the St. John Ambulance Association on Thursday. No less than 23 pupils attended ana listened to the surgical address by Dr. S. L. Haslett and the practical lecture by Mr. L. O. Jellie. Each address occupied about threequarters of an hour.

The diamond-back moth is causing much concern in the South Island owing to its ravages among rape and turnips. As about half a million acres are in rape and turnips in the Dominion by far the greater area is in the South Island—considerable economic loss must ensue. On small areas the use of a knapsack sprayer employing- an arsenical spray—Paris green lib and 31b of soap to 50 gallons of water—is advocated.

The cream-receiving- depot at Putaruru will be closed for the first time this season on Sunday next, and thereafter will receive on four days each week. The abnormality of the season in the matter of production is pointed to in the fact that last season the four days’ receiving was reverted to early in April. More cream was received in April this' year than in February last year, and nearly as much as in January. About 25 per cent, of the new suppliers had not served any dairy company previously. USE SYKES’S DRENCH. Cleanses the blood. Prevents milk fever. 1/6 packet. 17/- dozen.

The wilderness beyond the throng for me ! Within the shadow of a mighty tree, A dish of figs,- this bowl of crimson wine, With thee beside shall make a feast divine. And as the sunset fades—one radiant star ! To sanctify the spreading sands afar— Chill winds may wait ,but comfort we’ll assure With precious Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure. (6)
