CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce was held on Monday, when the following members were present: Messrs J. W. Barr Brown (chairman), J. Simpson, L. C. M. Wilson, J. Spear, G. G. Griffiths and A. H. Dukeson (secretary). ADVISORY BOARD. The Matamata County Council wrote advising that in accordance with the suggestion of the Railway Department it was proposed to set up a local advisory board. The views of the chamber were asked for, and if favourable, a delegate to be appointed. The chairman: Actually the. Railway Department are turning round and asking for advice. Mr. Simpson: How much will they take? (Laughter). Members were agreed that the new committee should be able to perform good work, and on the motion of Messrs. Griffiths and Wilson, Mr. J. Spear was elected to represent the chamber. TIRAU CROSSING. The chairman mentioned that he thought something further might be done with regard to the dangerous crossing at Tirau. Mr. Griffiths explained that he had been told on excellent authority that several engineers ha<j surveyed the line at that spot, and marked off a crossing for an overhead bridge just below the present crossing. In view of two accidents which had occurred since the chamber last wrote, he suggested further action be taken. On the motion of Messrs. Griffiths and Wilson, it was decided to make further urgent representations to the Railway Department on the matter, pointing out the crossing was on a main national highway. PUTARURU BAND. The Putaruru Band wrote asking if the chamber could see its way to alter the date of its meetings.—Decided to reply that the matter would be discussed at the annual meeting. TOWN LIGHTING. It was suggested that the chamber assist the town board with information in regard to street lighting. Mr. Spear mentioned that some of the present lights were of too small power. He thought the one in Oxford place should be increased to 5000 candle power. At the suggestion of the meeting, Mr. Spear offered to obtain, particulars of the latest lamps for street lighting. REDUCED TARIFF. The Rotorua Chamber of Commerce wrote in reply to a letter from the chamber that it was in thorough accord with the suggestion to give relief to the farming community by a reduction in the tariff rate on certain imports. STOCK OF STAMPS. M'r.. Griffiths stated that he had been asked to bring up the matter of 1 the amount of stamps stocked in the local post office. By regulation only a limited amount was ".'lowed, which I.c believed was £4O. As Putaruru supplied several country post offices ti'f-re was often a shortage, which had at times' caused considerable inconvenience. Mr. Dukeson: There are many occasions when it is impossible to get stamps. On the motion of the chairman, Messrs. Barr Brown, Griffiths and Dukeson were appointed to interview tl.e postmaster on the matter. NEW MEMBER. Mr. G. L. Martin was unanimously elected as a member of the chamber.
