DEATH OF MR. WILLIAM STEWART.
When it became known hero during Friday evening and Saturday that Mr William Stewart, one of our oldest and most respected residents, had died at Hawera, universal regret was expressed on all sides. Mr Stewart was born near Montrose, Forfarshire, Scot land, and came out to New Zealand at an early age. lie was for many years engaged at farm work m Hawke’s Bay, and with everyone was a genial favourite. lie came to Pahiatua about six years ago. and purchased the then only hotel from Mr I). Crowe, selling out a short time ago to Messrs Sullivan and Corboy. Wo think that the highest compliment that can he paid to Mr Stewart's memory is to say that we believe that lie had not a single enemy, lie was looked upon as an honourable, upright man by all who had any dealings with him. We feel now that it will he many a day before our good-natured, jovial friend William Stewart will he forgotten. Many clmntable and kindly actions have been done by him ; in fact, in any deserving case it might he reckoned that Mr Stewart would head the list, or provide free board and lodging. We feel sure our readers will join us in expressing sincere sympathy with his widow and relations in their sad bereavement. Tho funeral of the deceased gentleman took place yesterday, and it is estimated that nearly eight hundred persons attended to pay this last mark of respect. Among the mourners were a number of the members of the Masonic fraternity, besides nearly the whole of the members of the local Court of Foresters, Mr Stewart having been a member of both organisations. Tho services at the grave were conducted by the Rev. J. Saunders and Mr G. Moore, the latter reading the customary service of the Craft.
