The Hon. John Bright on Freetrade.
The Ilawera Star publishes a copy of an autograph letter received by K. Stock, a settler residing near Norinanby, from die Right Hon. John Bright. Mr Stock, who is one of the local champions of Freetrade, wrote to Mr Bright on the subject, who in his reply says— 44 Ignorance and selfishness are in partnership in defence of what is called Protection, nnd the question arises in the country and community, for are many ignorant, and all may U* reached by an a pi*-ul to their selfishness. After forty years of Freetrade, aid with prodigious success, wo have some Protectionists here who cal! the involves Freetraders. They rather shim the old name, for they know that to t»e unpopular, but the real object is the same we had to contend with s » long ago. I hojH* von will U Row the Course of ihe Old Country and New Sooth Wales, which. 1 am sure, i> the course of real prosperity and wisdom.
