PATRIOTIC WORKERS.
THE FKICTION AT PICTON.
At an adjourned meeting of the Picton Executive of the Marlborough Patriotic Society held last Friday, presided over by the President (Mr G. J. Riddell) the following motion, proposed by the Rev. Friberg, and seconded by Mr Peek pro forma, at the previous meeting, was read: — “That this Executive, while entirely approving of the welcoming home of our returned soldiers, and pledging itself to do all in its power to ensure the success of the social and dance to be held in Albert Hall on the 9th inst., takes very strong exception to the discourtesy to the Mayor and Corporation of Picton involved in the way of the meeting of Thursday, 21st ult., was convened, and desires to place on record that when the President took it upon himself to act in this manner, ho did so without the knowledge of the Executive.’ ’ After a general discussion, in which all the members took part, the President said he now thougnt he had made a mistake in not first calling a meeting of the Executive, but gave his assurance that what he had done was due to keeness and over-zeal, and not with the intention of usurping the Mayor’s position. He expressed the hope that the motion would be withdrawn, and regret that he had not consulted the Deputy-Mayor (the Mayor was out of town at the time) and called the Executive together. Mr Friberg said, this being the case, he would withdraw the motion, and the meeting terminated in a manner satisfactory to all concerned. —“Press,”
