FOOTBALL MATCH.

Tho only local attraction was a patriotic football match, married v. single, which was successfully got off in Brownlee Park on Monday afternoon in spite of a heavy shower of rain at the hour of starting. Although no rain fell during the match, the ground was very greasy in places, causing a few impromptu falls. A charge was made at the gate, and considering the unfavourable weather, the amount raised —£4 2s 6d—was very satisfactory. The following were the teams, 11 married men facing 13 single men: Single Men: Messrs N. Wratt, L. Twidle, W. Orsman, J. Simpson, F. Henderson, F. Johnston, F. Scott, E. Twidle, W. Pike, M. O’Connor, J. Campbell, E. Hutchinson, and J. Gilchrist.

Married Men: Messrs L. Smith, L. Elliott, Did Thomas, A. Reade, Alf Scott, C. A’Court Opie, J. Lovell, G. Harris, D. Galloway, F. Robertson, and W. Twidle, junr. The match was very evenly contested and resulted in a draw, each side scoring two tries, secured by Messrs J. Simpson and M. O’Connor (for the singles), and L. Smith and A. Reade (for the marrieds). The match_ was virtually a victory for tho ‘benedicts,’ for the reason that they were playing two men less than their opponents. Mr Owen Passau made an impartial referee.

We understand that a return match has been arranged for Saturday, 13th inst., when it is hoped that drier weather conditions will prevail.

Two of the seven cables connecting the North Island with tho South Island are out of commission. Tests made indicate that the breaks in both cables are about the centre of Cook Strait. Repairs are to bo commenced on Saturday.
