THE ARAHURA MISHAP.
Parliculars of the collision which occurred last Thursday evening between the Union Company’s steamer Arahura and a New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner show that the Arahura and the liner were leaving the bay when they came into collision, and as a result the Arahura was headed on to the beach, but not actually stranded until some hours later. With the assistance of the steamer Tuatea and the dredger Main the Arahura was edged in near the groyne. Hawsers were got out and attached to the groyne.
The vessel’s stokehold is several feet deep in water. The engineroom is also flooded. The point of the collision was on the port side. The plates of the upper works are torn, away over a gap of several feet, and below the waterline the side of the ship is badly dented and buckled. During the night, with the aid of the Harbour Board launch, mats were gob round the injured part of the ship. The liner was sailing for the south at the time of the mishap. VESSEL SETTLING DOWN. Salvage operations at the steamer Arahura have so far proved unsuccessful, and the vessel ha» settled down into the sand until the deck is level with the water.
The tug Terawhiti arrived at 12.40 this morning, and went aldqgside the Arahufa an hour later. The night was spent in making preparations, and pumping started after dawn. The Arahura’s bow appears to have lifted slightly, but the results of the pumping so far seam to indicate that there is a large hole in the 'vessel’s bottom not yet located. Better progress is expected to be made at low water. Fortunately the ' weather remains beautifully calm and fine.
