ENGLAND’S GREAT MEN.
STRIKING TRIBUTE TO MR LLOYD GEORGE. Speaking at the London Society of Arts recenll;, Sir John Simon said at this time of crisis, instead of reviving unnecessarily past controversies or criticisms, the better mind of the nation desired that wp should recognise the great qualities of both Mr Asquith and Mr Lloyd George, and rejoice that each of them in turn had put his great qualities at the service of his country. “Who is there,” Sir John continued, who denies the dauntless courage, inexhaustible energy, unfailing resource, and all the other striking qualities of Mr Asquith’s great successor ? Mr Lloyd George stands at this moment before the world as the embodiment of national vigour and determination, and there is a second quality not perhaps so readily remembered at this time, but one which lie pre-eminently possesses, by which, when the opportunity offers, he may be able to render priceless service both to his country and to the world. In the history of our own industrial controversies he has an almost unique reputatign as one who, when the golden opportunity came, has brought peace out of seemingly irreconcilable opposites. May these two groat gifts which he so abundantly possesses be used in the service of his country to secure the ends for which we entered upon a righteous war. Such, I think, must be tbe prayer of every patriotic and far-sighted citizen at this moment of our destiny.”
