Declaration Day

HOW IT WILL BE OBSERVED IN HAVELOCK A special meeting of members of the Town Board was held yesterday to consider the best way of meeting the wishes of the people in the observance of Declaration Day (Wednesday 4th August), and to fall m line with what is being done in other districts. *

It was decided, on the suggestion of Mr E. H. Smith, that the half-holiday be changed this week from Thursday to Wednesday, and a programme arranged for a fitting celebration of the day upon which Britain declared war on Germany The business people are asked to close their premises at one o’clock on Wednesday instead of Thursday, and the public will meet at the Town Hall at 2.30 p.m. The school children will be given a halfholiday, and the National Reserve are also asked to meet at 2pm The proceedings will be opened from the Town Hall steps by Mr W. H, Smith (chairman of the Town Board), and short patriotic speeches will be made by several citizens. The public will then be asked to carry the following Empire resolution ;

“That on the anniversary of the declaration of a righteous war this meeting of the citizens of Havelock and district records i’s inflexible determination to continue to a victorious end the struggle for the mamtenance of those ideals of liberty and justice which are the common and sacred cause of the Allies.” The proceedings will close with the singing of the National Anthem.

SPECIAL SERVICES. The first of the special services arranged for this week, to mark the closing of the first year of the war, was held in Bt. Peter’s Church on Sunday evening in the presence of a large congregation. The Vicar (Rev. A. H. Heron) preached an eloquent sermon on the rower of prayer, taking for his text, Mark, 11. chap., 24 verse: “What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive' them ahd ye shall have theca, 1 ’ Daring the service the names were called of the men who had enlisted from the parochial district of Havelock. This roll call, including the names of those; who had fallen, numbers eighty-one. As a voluntary, Mias L. Orsman played “ The Garland of Flowers in a very impressive manner, and at the close of the services verse of the National Anthem was sung by the choir and congregation. }-!.?■ k® r et ‘, r i?B collection, in aid of Church buildings for the various camps, amounted to £1 6s.

The special service .will be held every evening at 7 o’clock during the week, and at noon each day the bell will be tolled, and all are asked to offer a brief prayer for the welfare of our boys at the front.
