Belgian Relief Fund.
A meeting of the Havelock Patriotic Sports Club was held in the library on Friday evening to consider what should be done with the proceeds of the recent art union. Mr H. M. Reader was in the chair.
The treasurer (Mr W. H. Backman) reported that the amount he had in hand was £54 Is 9d.
Mr J. B. Lovell (secretary) said he was opposed to the money being sent through Blenheim. When the sports and gift sale was held some months ago, it was decided that the proceeds be sent direct to the Belgians, but as far as he knew the £365 forwarded to Blenheim was still in hand. Mr Gorrie said he understood that at the time this money was sent through to Blenheim the Government were giving a full subsidy on all money raised, and if that were so, we have lost that advantage through the money not being forwarded at once.
Mention was made by the chairman that the Blenheim Executive, in not forwarding more than the quota of £BO monthly had been acting under advice of those in authority. But the doubt that all the money sent for the Belgians was not reaching the right quarter has now been removed.
On the motion of Mr Buckman, it was decided that Mr Spence be asked by letter whether the sports money, which was sent'to Blenheim on the understanding that jt would be forwarded immediately, had been sent, and ajso whether it is not a fact that at that time all morjeys raised for the Belgians were receiving a full Government subsidy. In regard to the sum of £H Is 9d still in the treasurer’s hands, it was unanimously resolved that it be' forwarded at once direct to the Under-Secretary to be sent to Belgium.
