FATALITY AT MOTUEKA.

BOY DROWNED IN THE RIVER. The holiday in Motueka was marred by a sad drowning accident in which a lad named Harold Edmund Pike, 16 years of age, a son of Mr Pike, manager of the Whakarewa Orphanage, lost his life (says the “ Colonist ”). From the particulars available, it is learnt that a number of orphanage boys, together with deceased, were bathing in the river on Friday afternoon at 4.30, when Pike, who was able to swim, was seen to be in difficulties. The lad’s father, who was sitting on the bank, at once plunged in, fully dressed, to his son’s help, assisted by the lad’s companions, but all efforts at rescue were unavailing, and the lad sank in a hole 15 or 16 feet deep. Subsequently the body was recovered by Constable Pidgeon. An inquest will be held. Deceased was employed at' Messrs E. Buxton and Co.’s Motueka branch.
