BLACKBERRY OR FLAX?
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I see by your report of the Road Board that Mr Dalton satisfied the Board that the flax that was cut on the “ Blackberry Domain ” was not flax at all, but blackberry; that if it was flax it wasn’t cut on the Domain ; if it was cut on the Domain it was paid for; and, anyhow, it wasn’t cut on the Domain at all. Here’s a tangle—a “ jolly sight ” bigger tangle than it was before—don’t you see what I mean ? Youse must be hartless if youse don’t! I remember the time when everything in the garden was lovely up this way; but times have changed. Once we could cart fifty tons of flax from anywhere we pleased—one prominent Kaituna settler made a nice cheque by cutting it on the roadside! —but now, if a chap happens to be a bit too cute for the follow who thinks he’s smart, why, the fat’s in the fire.—l am, etc., Flax-bush.
