FOOTBALL NEWS.
The proposal to obtain some trophy for competition between the Rai, Canyastown, and Havelock Football Clubs is one that should be supported by every lover of the game in this district. Now that the Clubs have placed themselves under the jurisdiction of the Union, and so ensured that matches will be played according to the rules governing play and conduct, nothing could be more fitting than that they should have some worthy object for which to compete. Several suggestions have been made in this connection, all of them good; but we think that championship caps are the most suitable mementos of such games. A cup is well enough in its way, but it can only be held by one person and would cost about £6; gold medals (that were real gold) for fifteen players would, with the inscription, cost about £25 ; the same number of caps, with initials, would not cost more than £3. But it must be remembered that it is not at all likely that the same fifteen men would play in every match their Club played for the championship, and so it would probably be necessary to get at least twenty medals or caps. Twenty medals would run into about £BO, while a similar number of caps would cost less than £5. There would be no difficulty in getting this amount for championship caps, and we strongly urge the delegates at the meeting tomorrow evening to decide on that form of trophy.
