SPRING CREEK TRAFFIC BRIDGE.

At the Picton Borough Council’s meeting last week a letter was received from' the Spring Creek Road Board in reference |to the question of building a new traffic bridge over the Wairau, at Spring Creek, and stating that the Council’s proportion of the cost of the bridge had been fixed at 5 per cent. Or. Simmonds considered the bridge would not benefit Picton, as all the traffic was by rail. Cr, Philpotts said Picton was the recognised port of the Province, and anything which facilitated the work of producing in the productive pah of tffe Province must benefit the port. The project was certainly worth considering, but he was not prepared to move in the matter. Cr. McCormick said a surprise had been sprung on the Council, and he would move that the letter be considered at the next meeting. It was worth sleeping on, at any rate. . Cr. Smith said if the various local bodies objected to contribute on the basis laid down a Commission would no doubt be set up to apportion the cost. Cr. McCormick considered that as the bridge was on the main road between Picton and Christchurch, the Government’s subsidy of £ioqo was a very poor one, Cr. Peek said if objections were made and a Commission set up the Council might be called upon to contribute xo per cent. The Mayor said it would be better for the whole district if it had a County Council to take charge of the main trunk roads. It was decided to let the matter stand over until next meeting.—Picton Press.
