Trial of Harry Thaw.
PAINFUL EVIDENCE. THE STORY OF THE PRISONER’S WIFE. BETRAYED IN HER YOUTH. New York, February 9. The trial was continued yesterday of Harry Thaw for the murder of Stanford White in the Madison Square Garden Theatre last June. Thaw’s wife was submitted to a painful interrogation. She told the Court how W lute had ensnared and ruined her before she was sixteen years of age. Owing to her past, she had at first refused to marry Thaw. When pressed for the reason she informed Thaw of the whole: of the circumstances. She said that when he became acquainted with the facts Thaw was greatly distressed. He declared that any decent person would know it was not her fault. The witness gave her evidence in an impressive manner throughout, describing the tragedy and the scene immediately preceding it. In the course of her evidence, Mrs Thaw stated that White drugged her prior to ruining her,, Everybody in the Court was moved at the spectacle of the prisoner’s young wife sacrificing all that is dearer than life to save her husband. Her bearing was timid, almost childlike. The effect on the jury was marked. The harrowing recital seemed to be addressed directly to them. Thaw sobbed as the details of his wife’s early experiences wore revealed to the public. Later. Mrs Thaw disclosed facts which proved that White, assisted by a lawyer named Hummel, had acted a dastardly part against her and Thaw before they were married,
