Hikoekoea Echo's.
[By Wanderer.]
Lamb-shearing at Titirangi has just been finished and some three thousand lambs have passed through the sheds, the total number of sheep and lambs shorn this season being over 12,000. Mr Neave, the owner of Titirangi Station, has every reason to be proud of his flock; certainly no cleaner of better conditioned sheep will be found in the Sounds. I understand that the manager, Mr D. Neave, has a prime mob of freezers to be sent out shortly. The feed is in plenty on this * run and the hills are kept free from tahine and other weeds, consequently the sheep are always clean and healthy. Another feature about this station is the garden, situated near the beach; it certainly is the most wonderfully productive piece of ground I ever saw. Vegetables of all kinds in plenty, likewise small fruit such as gooseberries, raspberries, currants, etc., have been very plentiful; the other kinds of fruit-trees, although young, are very forward, and will be a sight worth seeing in another year. How is it that there is only a mail once a fortnight to this locality? I think Hikoekoea must be the only place in New Zealand where such a state of things exists. lam sure the attention of the popular Member for the District has only to be drawn to the matter and the existing evil will be remedied. The Manaroa brings a mail once,a fortnight—could it not be arranged for a weekly call ? There is a considerable mail both to and from Wellington, but a weekly service would prove a boon. Had there been such a service several whose papers were returned as informal at the general election would have been enabled to have the mistakes rectified and have been able to record their votes, which, as it was, they were unable to do.
The weather has been very unsettled the last few days, with heavy rains and regular gales blowing from the southeast.
