DEFENCE OF NEW ZEALAND. •' Sydney, March 17. Admiral Bridge, in an interview with regard to the defences of New Zealand, said their condition was much the same as other colonies from a striking insufficiency of men. The defences were in admirable order and beautifully kept, reflecting the highest credit on those in charge, but one was perpetually haunted by the question of what is the good of all this if there is not enough of the proper men to man them. MURDER AND CANNIBALISM. Sydney, March 17. News from the Islands states that the natives of Mallcollo murdered and ate the native servant of a trader named Gana.
