WELLINGTON, December 22. The Premier and Lady Atkinson went South this afternoon. They spend their Christmas in Christchurch. Her Majesty the Queen has consented to stand Godmother to the infant son of Lord Onslow, and Mr Chas. Johnston, ex-Mayor of the City, and ex-M.H,E. will act as Godfather. Madam Burton, the well-renowned contralto, assisted by a choir of over 200 voices, will render the “ Messiah” in the Opera House to-night. The Eev. Chas. Clark preached at • \e Wesleyan Church last night to an ? prmous congregation. The sermon ,as one of remarkable and brilliant eloquence. The Lily, a ketch-rigged vessel, built a short time ago near Plimmerton on the Porirua Harbour, arrived in port yesterday evening -with a load of firewood from Queen Charlotte Sound. It is the intention of the owner to run her between the port and the Sound, a trade for which she is well adapted. Hop Kee, a Chinese storekeeper, was drowned yesterday while fishing on the Manawapouri Eiver, near Hawera. A telegram from Palmerston North says that the body of a man named John Henry McManaway, was found in the bush yesterday, crushed by the limb of a tree. He was working alone in the bush, and had apparently been dead for some days. Things political are now very quiet and there is not likely to be anything of a startling nature until Parliament meets on the 28rd prox. The Hon T. W. Hislop has not yet sent in his resignation but it is understood he will vacate office about the beginning of the year.
