Are the Majorities Represented ?
There is a certain amount of dissatisfaction expressed over the late elections in consequence of three or four candidates standing, and the one elected only securing about onethird of the votes, but we think in many cases .this is more apparent than real. It is quite pqssilfle that in the majority of eases the _ third candidate’s' votes would be divided between the others, and if they are so equal in public estimation as to poll almost the same number of votes
it seems a matter of small moment whether they get a majority of votes or not. There may be a few cases where the one elected would not have polled a majority, and in some cases it happens in consequence of some electors throwing their votes away on a man who has no chance as in the Nelson contest. Taking all things into consideration there is not so much to complain, of as at first sight appears to be the case.
