The Auckland Star is of opinion that party government has proved a dismal failure, and says:—"What the Colony wants is a party' of progress, and neither the present Premier and his few attached followers, nor Mr John Ballauce and his personal friends, come up to anything approaching the leader required at'the present crisis of our affairs. Such a man mus fc put all party feelings on one side ; he must he filled with an earnest desire to sweep away as Cromwell did, the glaring abuses which now exist in the working of our most important institutions. This, and not the lust of office, must be his recommendation. "
We (Press), understand that-be-tween eight and ten tons of antimony have been got out of the ground now being worked in Edgecombe Bay, near Endeavour Inlet. The ore is of good quality, and we expect to see the ground worked to good advantage. Samples of the ore have been brought up to Picton, The Gore rabbit-tinning factory is said to have in three months paid for and put through 100,000 pairs of rabbits, and the Ensign says that the question may well be asked whether the Government system of poisoning is not a direct waste of produce ? Over forty men are employed at the works alone. Mr Alf. It is reported that lung worm has made its appearance in flocks in the Wellington province, and that the mortality is great.
A letter from an Aucklander in Sydney states that there are thousands of people out of work and homeless. The inmates of the Sydney Poorhouse number 900. He warns people not to go there,
