Scene in a Menagerie.

A despatch from Berlin records a terrible drama in a menagerie at Pezon. A lion and haying got, apparently by accident, into the same den, were fighting, when Mdm. Castanet, the lion tamer, entered the cage to separate the fierce brutes. The lion'was ordinarily not under Madame Castanet’s control, blit was really attached'to her. Notwithstanding this; the lion threw himself upon the unfortunate woman, who was armed only with a riding whip, and rent her with his talons, inflicting instantly such terrible injuries that she was unable to move. Attendants standing by attacked the lion with" pitchforks, and with difficulty compelled him to quit his prey, bus the tames was already more dead than alive, and was taken from the den in an almost helpless state.
