RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.—GISBORNE.
[Before J. Booth, Esq., R.M.] Thursday, 30th August. Larceny. Sarah Jane Williams was brought up charged, on the information of Sergeant Bullen, with having stolen a gold chain and gold-mounted greenstone from the Turanganui Hotel, the property of Susan DeCosta, The prisoner pleaded “ Guilty.” Mr Brassey, who stated that he appeared on behalf of the girl’s parents, said she had been a constant source of trouble to her friends. Her father had stated that she was only about sixteen, and it was deplorable to see a young gill like her placed in that position. Her parents would be very pleased if she could be sent to a reformatory, but as that was not possible, he trusted that His Worship would meet the requirements of the law by so dealing with her that it might not punish her friends more than her. He also trusted that his Worship would administer some wholesome advice and rebuke. After His Worship had strongly set forth the evils of the course she was pursuing, he sentenced her to 30 days’ hard labor in the Gisborne gaol. Friday. Teat & Fryer v. R. Cooper. This case was adjourned from Tuesday last, in order that His Worship might consider his decision. He now gave judgment for the plaintiff with costs £5. Burton v. Graham Pitt & Bennett. This case was also adjourned for the same purpose as in the former case, and His Worship said he would give judgment for defendants. Mr Bees, on behalf of the plaintiff, said he would accept a nonsuit. Nonsuited accordingly, with costs £4 9s. Common & Co. v. U.S.S. Co. Mr Brassey, for the plaintiffs, applied that the case might stand adjourned for fourteen days, as evidence was now being taken in Auckland. Adjourned until the 14th of this month, E. P. Joyce v. A. Martin, This was a judgment summons for £4 4s. The defendant pleaded that he was not in a position to pay the amount. An order was made for the amount to be paid by monthly instalments of £1 Is, the first payment to be made by this day month, in default 7 days imprisonment.
