ANNUAL LICENSING MEETING.

Tuesday, April 22, 1873. [Before W. K. Nesbitt, Esq., R.M.; J. H. Campbell, Esq., R.M.; J. W. Johnson, Esq., J.P. ; J. B. Poynter, Esq., J.P.; and Major Westrup, J.P.] J. Bradley, Albion Hotel, applied for an extension of licens&to 12 o’clock. Inspector Pjtt said that complaints had been made against this house for supplying grog to drunken men, and that no name appeared according to the Aet License, granted with a caution that the clauses of the Licensing Act, which enables the Magistrate to inflict a fine of £2O will be rigidly enforced in future.

A. Blair, Argyll Hotel, extended to 12 o’clock. Inspector reports that no name appears, and no urinal. License granted on condition of supplying requirement of the Act. A. Dalziell, Makaruka Hotel. Inspector reports no name over door, but accommodation very good. Only a one-stalled stable. License granted. A. Hird, Royal Oak Hotel, Matawhero. Inspector reports no name, no urinal, only one bedroom. License granted on conditions. Robert Colebrook, Waerengahika Hotel. Inspector reports no name, lamp, urinal, stable, or bedrooms, and that several complaints had been made against the house when first opened as being badly conducted, although of late a great improvement was apparent. License granted on the conditions required. .J. Villers, Chandos Hotel, Ormond. Mr. Villers applied for a reduction in the amount of license fee. Inspector reported no urinal, no lamp, no name, no stable, and only two bedrooms. License granted on usual conditions. Reduction not acceded to.

O. Goldsmith, Ferry. Hotel, Waipaoa. Inspector reports one sitting room, no bedroom, urinal, stable, lamp, name or paddock. Not well conducted. Complaints made to the police. No informations laid. Granted conditionally till June, to comply with the Act. J. E. Green, Karawa Hotel, Mr. Cuff appeared for applicant and said it was a transfer license. The Inspector reported two bedrooms, no stable, and no urinal on the premises. The house had only lately been opened, but was clean and in good order. License granted on conditions being fulfilled. A. Tibballs, Murewai Hotel. The Inspector reported no urinal, lamp or name, on premises. Travellers otherwise speak well of the house. License granted on conditions. J. Trimmer, applied for a renewal of his Bush License at Tologa Bay, which the Bench granted, and on the understanding that if it should be found necessary to issue a publicans license, an application to that effect would be favorably entertained.

Mr. Mullooly applied for a license for the Sea View Hotel at Tologa Bay.- Mr. Cuff supported, and Mr. B. Taylor opposed the application. Mr. Cuff contended that superior accommodation was required. Mr. Taylor, in reply, produced a memorial against the opening of another public house in that district, and amongst the protestors the names of two natfre assessors. Mr. Cuff said that went for not hing, as the names of two native assessors also appeared in support of it. License granted.

NEW UCENBES. S. C. Caulton applied for a 12 o’clock license for an hotel to be built on section No. 51 Gisborne; to contain 21 rooms, and to be ealled the Masonic HoteL Plans were exhibited to the Bench. In answer to thelLM., Mr. Caulton said he would undertake to complete the building by the Ist of July next. License granted there being no objection raised.

W. Daly applied for a 10 o’clock license for his newly-erected premises in Lowe-street, Gisborne, to be called the Shamrock Hotel. There being no objection to the application the license was granted. B. W. Magill applied fora license for a building to be erected at Ormond. Mr. Cuff, who appeared for applicant, Quid he was aware his client was late in his application, but that was occasioned by the fact tliat he had only recently left the Armed Constabulary Force. The Bench considered they could not entertain the application as it had only been received this morning. L. Higgins applied for a new license for a house he intended to build at Makaraka, to be called the Golden Fleece Hotel. Mr. Cluff appeared for the applicant. Plans, Ac., of the premises were produced. Mr. Cuff said that his client intended to cany on a first-class trade, and to make the district otherwise valuable by sinking an artesian well. He had heard that a memorial had been sent in to the Bench against granting the license, but contended that the Act had not been complied with. He read section 23, and asked the Bench to reject the spurious document called a memorial inasmuch as no statutory declaration was appended. In answer to the Bench, Mr. Holloway said he had not taken the census although he had declared to having done so, but had signed to the best of his belief. The Bench decided to reject the memorial, and granted the license on the understanding that Mr. Higgins undertakes to expend £lOO in sinking an artesian well on the premises—always supposing that water cannot be obtained tor a less sum.

WHOLESALE LICENSES. G. E. Read and S. T. Horsfall applied for wholesale spirit licenses which were granted.
