To the Editor of the P. B. Independent.

Sir, —I am one amongst many who have cause of complaint against the company’s boats, for the loss entailed npon shippers from time to time by conduct which comes within the catagory of petty larceny, by persons unknown. 1 atn in the habit of procuring fruit from Auckland and other places by the case, and as I import to sell I cannot afford to lose, as I did for instance last week, fully half a case out of two cases of oranges. I'he shipping notes bear an endorsement setting forth certain “exceptions and stipulations” concerning the obligations of the company’s agents and employees. Amongst others are enumerated “ robbers and thieves by land or sea.” If the company cannot protect my goods, so that property which is shipped to my order shall reach my hands without diminution in transit little encouragement is afforded to make any attempt at importing by the company’s boats. I wish to call your attention to this matter, as it really affects the interests of many. There may be some source for the protection 1 ask for. Perhaps you will advise me.—Yours. &c., Fruiterer. Gisborne, Nov. 2, 1885. [We would advise “ Fruiterer ” to lay the matter before the local agent. From what we know of that gentleman we have little doubt but «hat the matter will receive prompt attention at his hands, and that ail possible care will be taken to protect the company’s, customers from such like depredations.— Ed. P. B. Independent.)
