GERMAN SHIP DESERTERS

TWO TO LEAVE N.Z. (Pur Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. Four young Germans appeared m the New Plymouth Police CoUrt this morning charged with desertion and being prohibited immigrants. Joseph Stein, aged 18, and Karl Friedrich Drews, aged 19, who deserted from the Dortmund at Auckland on April 11 and were arrested at New Plymouth on April 14, were sentenced to two months' imprisonment and ordered to be placed aboard the Dortmund when she returns to Wellington on May 8 to load for Germany. A remand was granted in the case of Hans Kobald and Karl Schroeder, who pleaded guilty to deserting the Kommodore Johnson at Auckland. It was stated that if they were returned to Germany they would be regarded as military deserters and would have to face a serious penalty. Mr. F. L. Frost, M.P., was interesting himself in their case and the matter was being taken up by the Minister of Marine, the Hon. P. Fraser.

MEN MISS VESSEL DEPORTATION ORDER (Por Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Charged with deserting the German shiip Dortmund at Auckland on April 13, Heinz Welling,'aged 18, and Willi Ostkamper. aged 20, told Mr. C. R. Orr-Walker. SJM., in the Police Court, through an interpreter, 'that they missed the Ship and had no intension to desert. They admitted entering New Zealand without a permit. The Collector of Customs asked for a deportation order, stating that the ship was now out of New Zealand waters, but would be at Wellington on May 8.

The magistrate 'made a deportation order, the two men to be kept in custody meanwhile. The charge of desertion was withdrawn.
