RESERVE BANK RETURN

RISE IN STERLING GAIN OF £274,166 SHOWN (Per Tress Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Reserve Bank return for the week ended Mouday, April 17, was gazetted last night. The balancing total of the statement at £31,160,962 is £213,709 more than at the end of the previous week. The feature is a rise of £274,166 in sterling exchange reserve to £4,872,813, Government and trading bank deposits have increased moderately, and other liabilities have risen slightly, but the note issue is lower by £16,844. The ratio has shown a substantial improvement, moving up to 215.305 per cent from 25.501 per cent a week ago. Advances to the Primary Produce Marketing Department have fallen by £217,424 on the previous week's figure, while those for other purposes have risen again by £IOO,OOO.
