MATAWHERO STOCK SALE

NOTE OF OPTIMISM STORE WETHERS ADVANCE At the stock sale held at the Matawhero saleyards to-day the market showed a note of optimism following the rain which ended the drought in the district. A pronounced feature of the store sheep section was the advance in the prices for wethers, while an improvement was noted also in the values (for fat sheep and for the best lines of cows.

Beef

Only a small yarding of beef came forward and values for best Jersey cows improved, making up to £4 10s, with average Jersey cows from £3 iis to £3 15s. One station cow made £4 14s, and a good quality Hereford vealer £1 10s.

The individual pen prices were:— One good bridle steer (p), £4 14s; 1 brindle heifer, £2 15s; 1 good small red heifer, £2 lis; 1 small black polled heifer, £1 19s; 1 lusty Hereford heifer. £1 10s; 3 good Jersey cows, £4 10s; 1. average Jersey cow, £3 15s; 1 medium Jersey cow, £3 Gs; 1 medium black cow, £2 14s; 1 average Jersey cow, £3 13s; 1 good P.A. cow, £4 14s; 2 good average Jersey cows, £3 ss.

Fat Sheep

The offering of fat sheep totalled 220. Best ewes made from 12s to 13; Bd, these figures being above those oi last week. The other ewes sold a) from 9s to 10s 9d, with a few mediun: at 7s to 7s 4d. The few lambs offerim: were good, making 12s to 16s Gd Prices: — Ewes.—Six, medium, 7s; 9,12 s; 20 12s 9d; 20, 10s 9d; 17, 9s Gd; 20, :h 7d; 10, 13s 8d; 19, 9s 4d; 37, 9s; 13. 9s 3d; 4, medium, 7s 4d. Second-grade Ewes.—Twelve at 4d. Lambs. —Four, Southdown, 12s; 19 heavy, Southdown, 16s Gd; 10, good Southdown, 15s.

Store Sheep

There was a moderately sized entry of store sheep, the feature of the sale being a good improvement in the values for wethers, with other sheep showing no noticeable change. Wctihers .reached 14s for a good pen of fat and forward, with other good lines making from lis to 12s. Breeding ewes realised 14s 7d for 2-tooibs. 9s 9d for a very good pen of G-year, and 13s 3d for mixed ages; mostly 4-tboth. Wether lambs brought 7s Id for a bigh country pen from Messrs. Wallis and Wallis, and Gs 5d for another pen. "Values were:— Bneeding Ewes. —Eighty-eight, 2tooths, Southdown rams, fresh condition, fairly good frame, 14s 7d; 270, up to 8-tooth, mostly 4-tooth, Southdown rams, good store condition, 13s sd; 55, 2-tooth to 5-year, Romney raims, \good store condition, some small and light, Gs 9d; 48, up to 5year, good store condition, 9s 6d; 141, 6-year, Southdown dams, good mouths, and good ewes, 9s 9d.

Wether Lamlbs.—Two hundred and five, shorn, a great line, well grown, good store condition, Gs sd; 3G, shorn, fairly good size, store condition, 4s 7d: 35, shorn, fairly good size, store condition, 4s Id; 79, on account of Messrs. Wallis and Wallis, a good high country pen, 7s Id; 51, Southdowns, fairly good size, store condition, 3s 9d. Wethers. —Fifty-one, 2-tooths, fairly good lot, 8s 2d; 103, in good order, lis; 287, on account of Mr. A. C. Bellerby, a good pen, fat and forward, 14s; 106, a good sturdy lot, lis lOd; 23G, 2-taoths, a good meaty line, 12s.
