BOMBING OF BRIDGE
HAMMERSMITH DAMAGE TWO SUSPECTS HELD (Reed. March 30, 11 a.m.) LONDON, March 29. Two time bombs exploded on Hammersmith Bridge early this morning, blowing away part of the superstructure in the centre of the bridge. The explosions were heard over a wide area and the windows in buildings in the neighbourhood were broken. Nobody was injured. Two men were detained in connection with the explosion. It is expected that the -bridge will be closed to heavy traffic for three weeks. The overhead suspension girders were seriously damaged. A man walking on a footpath of the bridge picked up a box from which he heard crackles. He threw lit into the river, the bbx exploding before touching the water. As the man left the bridge a second explosion occurred on the other footpath. A car-hire firm reports that a chauffeur drove two men to the Thames and stopped near the bridge. The chauffeur was held down when the explosion occurred and the men disappeared.
Over 100 windows were broken in the vicinity of the bridge.
