SCOUT NOTES

MANY PASS TESTS CAMP AT EASTER Y.M.C.A. TROOP PEER Bv “Scoutci” The Y.M.C.A. Cub pack held its weekly meeting last Saturday afternoon, when many tests were put through. Twenty-eight Cubs were present, and the officers attending were Cubmaster G. 11. Foote, Group Ollicor J. Raves. Assistant Scoutmaster .1. Borlase, and Cub Instructors N. Dow, C. Booth, ,1. Stevens and R. Kennedy. One new recruit, Ross Martin, joined the happy family, and proved very keen, for he passed his promise and cub laws, and salute during th( afternoon.

Others to pass tests were:—Tenderpad, part test. —J. Stichbury, G. Allen, V. Davidson, and B. McCoy. First Star, exercises. —A. Burns, B. McBreen, B. Moss, C. Stevens, D. Davies, B. Alley, ,J. Green, P. Sutton and .T. Hollamby. First Star Work.—Ball catching: P. Piantcn. Skipping: P. Vaile and P. Planter,. Cleanliness and health: R. Jones, R. Hill, R. Hollamby and M. Allwood.

The second star work was taken by Mr. Kayes, and tenderpad by the Cubmaster and Mr. Borlase, while the Cub instructors took first star work The total strength of the pack now stands at 35.

The pack is keen to gel ahead, and is working hard at present to pass the tests, so as to be able to work for proficiency badges. A,Her the work period the Cubs had 20 minutes playing games outside on the lawn, and then came inside for two treasure hunts, which were very keenly contested. The Cub howl, taken by Cub Instructor .J. Stevens, ended the meeting. Cubs of the Y.M.C.A. Pack arc not having another meeting until the first Saturday after Easter, April 15. We trust you will aIL enjoy your Easter holidays, and be fit and ready to work hard when we start off again. Y.M.C.A. Scouts At last Saturday’s Scout parade 28 boys answered the roll call, and a good programme of work was carried out. Mr. W. E. B. Froggatt, of Hie St. John Ambulance Association, took ambulance badge work with the senior Scouts. A signalling squad under Mr. W. Maunsell did good work, while Mr. Borlase instructed in tenderfoot work. Two new Scouts, Jim Gray and Peter Harding, joined the troop, making a full troop of 42 Scouts. Any more wishing to join will have to go on a waiting list. A second class ambulance test was taken by Mr. P. Mitchell. Boys who passed parts of tenderfoot tests were C. Lawn, S. Lawn, L. Corn, C. Bloxham, .D. Hitchener, W. Edwards, A. Maseman, R. Kennedy, P. Harding and J. Gray, knots only. A game of indoor soccer was played, and when the boys were warmed up they began another period Of work. This was followed by patrol games, which were evenly contested, the final toeing won by G. Judge’s patrol. Inspection and roll call were taken by the scoutmaster, and the troop certainly turned out neatly attired. Next Saturday we hop'e to get the tents pitched for the Easter camp, :nd hope to have as many Scouts as possible at the camp site, with their Tmch. in order to complete the preparations, so that the Scouts can go straight into the tents when they go out to-night week. Please try and be at the camp site by 10.30 a.m. Some members of the newly-formed Sea Scouts also will be at the camp, and we hope they have a pleasant experience. Mangapapa Troop Last Wednesday the Mangapapa :L>op held its weekly parade, when ::2 Scouts were present to answer the roll call. The proceedings opened with a short talk on the Jamboree bank by Scoutmaster D. Corstorphine, after which the troop was put into small work squads under the officers and patrol leaders. The senior boys did life-saving and land drill, and showed much promise. The Scoutmaster took charge of the tenderfoot work, while \lr. Borlase and Troop Leader E. Doherty took second class tests. Stave drill and the uses of the stave also were taken. First-aid for second class was practised. Altogether the boys accomplished i good evening’s work, and are making good progress. Twenty-five "Touts will be attending the Easter •'amp. As it was too late to play games when the work had finished, lie troop was dismissed. Mangapapa Pack Last Saturday afternoon 13 Mangapapa Cubs met for their weekly parade in the Scout Hall, Bryce street, where games and work, both first and second star, were gone through. Messrs. 'Glanville and Maunsell were in charge of the pack, assisted by Cub Instructor G. Evans. Many tost parts were done, and all are working hard to pass the respective stars. A pound night will be held on Saturday, when the meeting will commence at 3 p.m, and finish at 7 p.m. Recruits are needed in this pack, to start after the Easter vacation, so any lads between the ages of eight and 11 years who wish to join will be welcomed by the Cubmaster. At present we have only first and second star Cubs, and are looking forward ‘o having some tenderpads after the holidays.
