MILLER CUP FOURS

GISBORNE CLUB RACES SERIES OPENED TO-DAY Racing in'the first round of the Miller Cup fours, two Gisborne Rowing Club crews took advantage of this morning’s tide and decided their rivalry on the Waimata course. R. Mahon, str„ S. Allen, I. Bolton and J. Sheet defeated A. M. Terry, str., K. Hall, F. Henry and P. Fischbach by a bare canvas, after a hard tussle all the way. Mahon got away at the start to a lead of nearly a length, which he held to the William Pettie bridge, and though Terry sprinted and drew into the lead for a time, Mahon recovered well and in a hard finish g'ot the nose of his boat ahead. The series will be continued this evening, when L. Win,Stanley, str., E O’Hhlloran, J. Hutchin, and R. Ogilvie will meet A. C. Paine’s crew which is to be taken over by A. M. Terry in consequence of Paine's transfer. With Terry will be 11. Wall. P. Edwards, and P. Sceats. On Saturday afternoon, Gisborne Rowing Ciub crews stroked respectively by R. Mahon, L. Winstanlcy. T. 'Bright and A. M. Terry will race against Poverty Bay Rowing Clut crews in the annual series for the Warren-Thompson Shield, presented two years ago for inter-club competition by two prominent lady supporters of rowing. The trophy has been competed for twice, and to date honours are even.
