SECOND TEAMS MEET

TOROA BATS WELL HOME SIDE BEATS 11.8. SENIOR B PLAY A solid opening partnership between W. Toroa and l l '. Gardner, which put on 87 for the first wicket, piaced Poverty Bay B in a strong position in the senior B game with Hawke’s .Bay B at the Oval during the. week-end, and the home side maintained its lead throughout to score a comfortable victory. In their second strike Poverty Bay were left to get 65 to win and accomplished this without any difficulty. The honours of the game were definitely with the home team, for whom Toroa, Gardner and Barbour were outstanding. Pattullo and Pell were the opening pair for Hawke’s Bay B, who won the toss, and scored at a fast rate to place 31 runs on the board in the first halfhour. They looked set for a profitable partnership, but Barbour soon put a stop to any possibility of this by dismissing Pell at 14. This wicket fell at 32 and, with'the addition of four runs to the total, Barbour secured two more wickets in his next over, a maiden. Dowrick and Stanford were the unlucky pair, but after Watson had gone for six, Pattuilo and Templeton became associated in a profitable partnership which ended when Pattullo was run out after an excellent knock. His score of 64 included a large number of singles, but he batted correctly in view of the state of the game. Temperton and Krogh were the next pair lo make a stand, scoring 45 and 22 respectively. Howell, 12, arid Joseph, six not out, helped swell the total to 184, with 11 extras. Barbour In Form Barbour struck a dangerous patch in the first hour of the game and bowled well throughout. Lee had the best average, the slow bowler taking five wickets for 31 runs off 7.2 overs. Barbour had 56 runs taken off 18 overs, with three maidens and three wickets, while Wilkie bowled 14 overs, two of which were maidens, for 50 runs. Toroa Bats Well Toroa and Gardner, who opened for Poverty Bay, pasted the visitors from the start and soon had 40 runs on the board. After the tea adjournment the pace slackened, although the scoring was still steady. Gardner was first to go when he had reached 38, being leg before wicket to Howell. McMahon came next and (lie pair ran some very short singles, with Toroa reaching his half-century. A four off Dowrick by the same player raised the side’s total to 100. Shortly afterwards Toroa was caught behind for 56 by the ’keeper, Alsop, off Krogh. Balfour came next and soon lost ' McMahon, who went leg-before when he had reached 27. Little trouble was experienced in passing the visitors’ total, a solid 17 by Barbour contributing materially to the tally, and on the resumption of play on the second day Wilkie, the last man in, supplied the only bright spot, with a sixer, before the innings ended for 251. Wilson bowled well for the visitors and sent down 14 overs for 44 runs, taking six wickets. Howell was the other stock bowler, securing two wickets for 63 runs of! 12 overs. Josephs, a High School player, was costly, and had 61 runs scored off nine overs for one wicket. As in the A grade game, wickets fell rapidly early in the second innings of Hawke’s Bay. Dowrick was first to go, clean-bowled by a beauty from Gardner, and he was rapidly followed by Pattullo and Pell, both of whom fell victims to Barbour. Wilson Patient Wilson scored a patient 25, interspersed with some good boundaries, before falling to Lee. Krogh hit a hefty six off Lee, but fell soon afterwards to Birrell when his score was 24. Howell, who was next, failed to score. Stanford, with an excellent 41 to his credit, was clean bowled by Birrell. His score included only three but his batting was very correct. Alsop was last to go, the total being 131 and leaving Poverty Bay requiring 65 runs to win. Birrell finished with the best average for the home bowlers, the Civil Service trundler securing three wickets for 14 runs off 5.1 overs. Barbour again bowled well and tooic three wickets for 20 runs off six overs, while Lee was costly with one for 43. Poverty Bay required only 65 for an outright win, and secured these for the loss of four wickets, Birrell 18 not out, McMahon 17, and Lee 16. Details are as follow: HAWKE’S BAY First Innings R.
