FILE SHIELD CRICKET

MATCH SERIES CONCLUDE SUCCESS OF FREEZERS SEASON’S WINNERS The Gisborne Refrigerating Company’s cricket team ran out the winners of the File Shield for the 1938-39 season. On March 19 they staved oft a challenge from the Combined Printers and they successfully defended the trophy once again in a week-end match with Bignell and Holmes. The Refrigerating Company defeated the garage team by an innings and six runs, the game being one of exceptionally low scores. Batting first, Bignell and Holmes made 24 runs, Refrigerating Company replying with 81. The garage team’s second knock yielded 51 rurfs. The bowling of Holdsworth and Scott was principally responsible for the collapse of Bignell and Holmes, Holdsworth capturing nine wickets during the day for 24 runs and Scott eight for 33. “Mr. Extras’’ secured the top score of the match with 22 runs in the freezers’ first innings.
