For over five hours on Thursday a handful of men fought to subdue a bush iire which threatened 20' beach houses in the area behind the southern end of Piha Beach. About 30 acres of bush, tea-tree and small trees were destroyed before the flames were stopped less than 100 yards from the nearest of the cottages.
